Instructions you need to follow:

Prepare the Dried Beef:

  • For making shit on a shingle, first cut the beef into strips and then small pieces, and rinse the dried beef under cold water to remove excess saltiness. Pat dry with paper towels and chop it into small pieces (will be ½ into 1 inch).

Make the Sauce:

  • Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once melted, add the chopped dried beef. Cook for a few minutes until the beef begins to lightly brown.
  • Spread flour over the beef and butter mixture. Stir continuously for about 2 minutes to cook the flour and form a roux.
  • Add a pinch of crimini mushrooms (sliced), if you want (optional).
  • Gradually pour in the milk while mixing constantly to avoid lumps. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens and becomes creamy, usually around 5-7 minutes. You can add 1 Tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce (optional).
  • Season the sauce with black pepper and a dash of cayenne pepper if you want a bit of heat. Adjust flavouring to taste.

Toast the Bread:

  • Preheat oven to 375°. Arrange bread slices on a large cookie sheet. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil. Sprinkle with onion and garlic powder. After one side of the bread turns golden, flip it over and drizzle with olive oil again. Return to oven and continue baking until the bread crisps and browns.

Finish the Dish:

  • After the sauce has become the proper texture, turn off the heat and place a slice of toast on a dish. Then, generously spoon over the toast a generous amount of the creamed chipped beef.
  • Repeat for the remaining slices of toast and sauce.

Notes:

  • Either white or brown bread will work. Regular milk is OK if you’re not tracking calories; we merely tried to reduce the amount of calories in the dish. 75 milliliters, or 3 ounces, is ⅓ cup.
  • If you would want the sauce to be runnier, feel free to use a little bit extra.
  • You can experiment and pinch the seasoning as needed.
